"One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" by Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn was a short novel about the daily routine in the life of a prisoner in a Siberian prison camp. It came out in the early 60's . Its an easy read and very interesting.

In "My Childhood" by Marina Tsvetajeva each chapter could well be perceived as a separat short-story. You could read them in any order.
