To Sir, with Love : I swear, Poitier must be the only black man who can't dance!

I swear, Poitier must be the only black man who can't dance!

One helluva actor, no doubt, but we could've done with out that twitchy epileptic thing he did at the end! lol

You're right. Very stiff and awkward.

Re: I swear, Poitier must be the only black man who can't dance!

He can probably dance in real life. His character was out of place, dancing with the students. He was supposed to be a bit awkward

Maybe not. According to Wikipedia:

Poitier joined the North American Negro Theatre, but was rejected by audiences. Contrary to what was expected of African American actors at the time, Poitier's tone deafness made him unable to sing.[25]

The cited source is Sidney Poitier: Man, Actor, Icon (2004) Aram Goudsouzian, University of North Carolina Press ISBN 978-0-8078-2843-4 p44

If he's tone deaf, he may lack rhythm as well!

Re: I swear, Poitier must be the only black man who can't dance!

Sidney is NOT the only black man who can't dance. Just like he probably can't play basketball either. But also contrary to the stereotype, he is a very literate and sensitive man, and as he shows in this movie and many others, he has strong dramatic acting ability.

jeez.

Re: I swear, Poitier must be the only black man who can't dance!

Hah! there were some guys in my (mostly black) neighborhood back then who started imitating Poitier's non-moves. They called it the Sidney!

May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?

Re: I swear, Poitier must be the only black man who can't dance!

He danced a hell of a lot better than Travolta did in Pulp Fiction.

Sydney gots him some good moves in that dance.

Damn, I'm good.

Re: I swear, Poitier must be the only black man who can't dance!

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought this, it is a benevolent stereotype that all black men can dance but yeah, good old Sidney - bless 'im - would certainly be the exception here. One of his dance moves looked as though he was attempting to portray a mentally disabled version of Big Bird from Sesame Street.

That was the way young people danced in the late 1960s and he was playing a teacher, not an entertainer.
