Was it horse fur or course fur? Mary Brown was fascinating to watch. I think they said on the DVD commentary that besides the Blair Witch stuff, the stuff that Heather said Mary was into was all real.
I collect dead pigeons then I press them between the pages of a book.
Re: Post your last ever top 10
Yes I believe most of it was true. BTW it's definitely horse fur

1. The Blair Witch Project
A master class in what you don't see scares you all the more. It's not as simple as that though. They do inject the seeds of dread with some brilliant and comical interviews at the beginning. I particularly love the fishermen who hold completely opposing views on what's going on those woods. Uh, well some girl back in the late 1800's, Robin Weaver I believe her name was. Supposedly, wandered off and disappeared into the woods. Ain't no supposedly about it! She wondered off!
As kooky as Mary Brown was, her story about the woman with horse fur stays in your mind, even though the amateur documentary makers treat her with nothing but disdain. F*uck I wasn't listening to her because I thought she was a lunatic.
You begin to wonder, just as those three poor souls do, is there something supernatural going on or is this Deliverance? That question seems to answer itself when they walk all day in the same direction with a compass and come across the same log.
The use of sound in the black night incites a terror that had me covering my eyes like a child afraid of the boogeyman.
It feels very much set in reality and as each day/night passes, stranger, more terrifying things start to happen that have a sense of plausibility, leading up to a climax that doesn't cop out with any corny sighting of exactly what is behind all of this.
I saw this in the cinema upon release and I never looked at horror movies the same way again.
2. The Exorcist
I'm not a believer in God or the Devil but I do have the ability to ponder the 'what if'. The idea of pure evil existing is terrifying and no film brings this idea to the fore more effectively than The Exorcist. The fact that the demon decides to infiltrate the life and mind of a normal 12 year old girl and there's nothing that Chris MacNeil, a wealthy movie star with connections, can do about it but watch on helplessly, is truly scary. As Father Merrin says in the film, "I think the point is to make us despair"
3. The Shining
The star of the of the show here is the Overlook Hotel. Kubrick promptly sets up the sense of isolation, combined with an already tense family unit, and then introduces a vast and seemingly endless labyrinth of corridors and breathtakingly beautiful rooms that have a life of their own. You get to explore the place from Danny's perspective which proves to be terrifying.
Some people complain that Jack is just being Jack, which is true to a certain degree but it works. Shelley Duvall is perfect as the long suffering wife whose survival instinct kicks in. Some beautifully constructed sets and scenes combined with a killer soundtrack that have become iconic.
4. Candyman
Tragedy, terror and revenge set in the projects. A truly unique horror character that you empathize with even though he sends chills down your spine. A great lead performance from Virginia Madsen, with her hypnotic eyes, and Xander Berkley is perfect as the sleazy husband. A beautiful soundtrack by Phillip Glass that sticks in your head for days after hearing it. I hear you're looking for Candyman b*itch!
5. Phantasm
There's never been anything quite like this quirky horror film that had me wondering what the hell I was watching the first time I saw it all those years ago as a kid. For years (before the days of the internet) I was trying to find out what this movie was that I happened to watch on VHS and could not remember the name of. I would describe it to people as having spheres flying through the corridors of a mausoleum with a really creepy tall guy. I finally found it again thanks to the net and it now has pride of place in my DVD collection.
6. The Evil Dead
One of those lucky enough to make it onto the video nasty' list of the early 80's. This film is a fun ride with comedic elements but still enough seriously creepy stuff to keep it in the realm of true horror. The sequels, though entertaining enough, don't hold a candle to this gem.
7. Night of the Living Dead
Gritty realism takes the zombie genre to a new level and sets the standard for all future zombie films since. A true classic.
8. The Thing
You gotta be f*ucking kidding! A terrifying premise set in complete isolation with no escape. Special effects that will always be better than any CGI could ever hope to be. An enemy that hides itself perfectly. Any remnants of camaraderie or trust go out the window and you're truly on your own.
9. Jacob's Ladder
The road to heaven is paved with demons. In the wise words of Louis if you're frightened of dying and holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace then the devils are really angels freeing you from the earth. It's just a matter of how you look at it, that's all.
10. Ring
My love affair with Japanese horror began here. The American remake is not a bad effort but fails to capture the mystery and creepiness of Sadako. The actual video is much more unsettling in this too. The first time I saw it I was afraid I'd unleashed something and was terrified the phone was going to ring at any moment.
