Dirty Harry : how does it still have such a high rating? it aged horribly

Re: how does it still have such a high rating? it aged horribly

this movie is wonderful, still good in today standard, top 3 crime thriller of all time

Re: how does it still have such a high rating? it aged horribly

First off why would Harry admit to breaking and entering in his original police report knowing fully well that he didn't have a warrant then, especially an experienced cop like him. He caught Scorpio in the open stadium trying to make a run for it and shot him in the leg to prevent that. There is no other evidence or witness other than his partner and it's quite likely he would backup Harry's story rather than the obvious psychopath. And about torturing Scorpio to get information about the girl, he didn't have to admit that either, who would they believe, the police officer or the serial killer with loads of evidence against him like the gun used in previous killings including one dead cop and one injured, the knife wound inflicted by Harry, no alibi, possible witnesses..

Re: how does it still have such a high rating? it aged horribly

Its a movie, why so serious?

Re: how does it still have such a high rating? it aged horribly

Only liberals should find this movie upsetting and stupid.

Re: how does it still have such a high rating? it aged horribly

You just made a great case for liberals!

Re: how does it still have such a high rating? it aged horribly

Maybe you are over analyzing it? Sit back with a Coke and popcorn and be entertained. Otherwise you're going to be disappointed in most ever movie ever made, including classic thrillers like Dirty Harry.

Re: how does it still have such a high rating? it aged horribly

And then we wonder why film makers continue insulting our intelligence and churning out flop trashy movies and shows with star casts year after years...

Re: how does it still have such a high rating? it aged horribly

'Aged horribly'? Any film that was set in a big city, and in the present (for that time) is going to have popular culture references that will 'age'.

Dirty Harry was almost like the urban version of Clint's "man with no name" from the Spaghetti Westerns. Clint goes around San Francisco with his magnum shooting to kill any lowlife sc*mbag criminals that had it coming.

He was politically incorrect and took no prisoners. There was a clear anti-liberal message in the film. Criminals were there to be punished, with the rights of victims of crime put above those of the perpetrators.

Andrew Robinson as 'Scorpio', IMO played one of the all time great bad guys.

so many random scenes that are unnecessary: callahan talking down the jumper. the bank robbery. the liquor store. the peeping tom scene.

'Random scenes' - well crime is random, and the scenes help to establish Harry's character and methods to the audience. There were also light touches of humour throughout the film, to make Harry 'human' and likeable.

IMO, the final scene when Harry throws his badge into the water was very poignant.

9/10

Re: how does it still have such a high rating? it aged horribly

Most of what OP said was spot-on. Apart from Clint Eastwood's performance and the "most powerful handgun in the world" monologue, this movie has aged into a pretty unremarkable action flick. None of the other cops are interesting, the killer is ridiculously OTT and several scenes could have easily been axed.

Re: how does it still have such a high rating? it aged horribly

I think the reason some say this film is dated is because they compare this to modern films.
1st, "Dirty Harry" is a drama, not some buddy cop flick with CGI explosions every 5 minutes.
There's no sexy, hunk of a detective that beds women left and right, and drives a cool musclecar.
Harry doesn't even use any hi-tech device to catch Scorpio, except maybe the bug he wears during the ransom drop.
If this film is dated then fine. It's a gritty, realistic cop drama that doesn't need nor use any of the gimmicks modern cop flicks use today.
No rapper cameos/soundtrack, no gadgets, no topless bimbos, no fast cars, no slick wardrobe, just a cop bending the rules to stop a deranged killer.

That's all I need for entertainment, how about you...?

Re: how does it still have such a high rating? it aged horribly

Jason-brooks15, did you read my original post? It's none of the things you bring up, that make the movie seem dated to me. It's the fact that "Dirty Harry" isn't a gritty, realistic cop drama, but presented as such, that makes it seem old as hell.

how would zodiac get away from the roof top after he has been spotted by a police helicopter?

They were probably talking instead of looking, like they were supposed to.
