Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator : compare this movie to 'Dogtown and Z-boys'

compare this movie to 'Dogtown and Z-boys'

I have seen both films and there is some interesting similarities, or more accurately, interesting DISsimalirities. Whereas Dogtown is an inspiring movie about kids from broken homes who spark a street revolution, Stoked is a study of the excesses that revolution can cause. Say what you want about the Z-boys, they never raped and murdered anyone. They also had way more style. The footage in "Stoked" with Gator on MTV was disgustingly cheesy. It reminded of hip-hop in the early days being turned into P. Diddy and Jay-Z.

Re: compare this movie to 'Dogtown and Z-boys'

Why compare at all? Both docs are about skateboarding, yet "Dogtown" is about history and origins of the sport - "Stoked" is about ONE skater in particular and his downfall.

There really is no comparison, as far as I'm concerned. And the Z-boys never raped anyone? Are you sure? Cause i'm pretty sure a couple of them are in jail on drug charges, et al as i write this

"Stoked" is not "a study of the excesses that (skating) revolution can cause". It is not a STUDY at all - it's a documentary about the life of a man who made bad choices, who happened to also be a popular skater. It is fact. I think the film saught to NOT have the correlation between skateboarding (the sport) and Mark's crime- in fact, it was mentioned several times that many pro-skaters felt that Mark's trial would scar the sport forever - and it didn't at all.

And as far as the "disgustingly cheesy" footage of Gator on MTV in "Stoked" - it's a DOCUMENTARY. Not like the filmmaker can go back in time and change the archival footage? That's more of a critque on MTV, not valid to the movie.

Re: compare this movie to 'Dogtown and Z-boys'

"Stoked" is primarily about Gator but also devotes a lot to the whole skateboarding scene and how it evolved through the 80s. I wouldn't compare the two. They go together perfectly.

Re: compare this movie to 'Dogtown and Z-boys'

i like both of these documentaries very muchi see no reason to compare the two though. dogtown is about dogtown skating in the 1970's and stoked is about gator and/or skating in the 1980'si liked the fact that stoked showed a lot of the skateboarding aspect and not just gator alone. i, like many of the kids in the 80's, thought gator was really good and a funny, cool guy. i was shocked when he was arrested. but these two films are worth checking outespecially if you are or were a skateboarder.

Re: compare this movie to 'Dogtown and Z-boys'

i prefer Stoked for some reasonit's more interesting to me, maybe cause i grew up during the 80's
