Enough : Did they ever say why he changed so fast?

Did they ever say why he changed so fast?

He was a great husband until the daughter turned 5 or so, and then all of a sudden he became a abusive monster? It doesn't make sense. We need to know more of Mitch's back story.

Re: Did they ever say why he changed so fast?

Mitch didn't change. He was always a manipulative, controlling man.
This has been discussed on other threads here in more detail, but he didn't *become* an abuser.

Mitch wasn't the "typical" abuser, as in he didn't appear to hit or insult just for the sake of doing it.
He did it when his control was threatened, when he wanted something.

Re: Did they ever say why he changed so fast?

Why did it take him 5 years to show his true colors then?

Re: Did they ever say why he changed so fast?

It didn't, technically.
Mitch is not the typical abuser. Watch how he acts right from the start, smaller things become bigger things :

1. He manipulates Slim to get her to go out with him.

2. At their wedding, he says to her "Are you going to give me babies?" He doesn't ask "When are WE going to have a baby?"
He seems very upset that Slim's boss cares about her, he was counting on her having no parental figures around in case he needs to *assert* himself.

3. He threatens the homeowner to sell him his house or else.

4. He doesn't even say Hello to his wife when she calls to say she's in labor, he says "Yeah?" like she's a coworker....laughs yet says nothing....then hangs up on Slim without saying goodbye.

5. He oozes attention on her, yet when the baby appears he says "She looks just like ME." and completely ignores Slim when she wants to see her baby.
He gets a call from his mistress, but lies to Slim about it.

6. Of course, then we see him get caught cheating & manipulate Slim again.

7. Lastly, once he realizes she is asserting herself.....that's when we see the Mask fall. Mitch almost seems relieved that he doesn't have to pretend anymore. He tells Slim that he thought she understood, that since he made the money he was in charge. Slim likely didn't make many waves over the marriage, she seemed subservient.

Mitch was a man used to getting what he wanted; he was likely docile when he got his way....but when he did not...

Re: Did they ever say why he changed so fast?

did you not see him holding his newly born daughter and the cell rings...

mute---

who was that?
it's no body. some construction thing...

that was his girlfriend.

cause not two minutes later in the movie does she catch him when the girlfriend pages him and she returns the number.

Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.

Re: Did they ever say why he changed so fast?

Exactly. And the film is full of small examples of Mitch being cold, long before he ever hit Slim.

Watch how he reacts even, when Slim calls to tell him she's in labor (also note how his female assistant, who he calls Sweetie, looks JUST like his wife!.
He answers it "Yeah!" and then never even says a but a word to her, just hangs up the phone!

Plus, add when they are at the beach and he is staring at the ocean, looking bored. He faked every happy scene.

Re: Did they ever say why he changed so fast?

Mitch was not a good man, he was cruel and weak. His wife was just someone to control so that he could feel powerful. He didn't become this after he married. To attract people, he learned how to put up a good front, but it wasn't who he was. His true character was always there.
