Scooby-Doo : Hollywood Casting problem - a pretty woman to play Velma?

Hollywood Casting problem - a pretty woman to play Velma?

We all know that Velma is supposed to be a geeky and unattractive girl... so, whom did Hollywood pick to play her? A woman almost as hot as Daphne!

Can't Hollywood just realize that for once, they actually need to cast an ugly woman to play the role properly? When you have Velma hotter than Daphne, there is a problem!

Show me the holes!

Re: Hollywood Casting problem - a pretty woman to play Velma?

I don't think Velma was ever supposed to be unattractive in the cartoons. Obviously not drop-dead gorgeous but certainly not ugly or appalling. Linda Cardellini as Velma is a perfect representation of the character, in my opinion, and her looks did the character justice as well.

Oh, and Velma being hotter than Daphne or vice versa is just a matter of perspective. Tastes vary!

Daphne was not hotter. Gellar has that crooked, *beep* up mouth.

Re: Hollywood Casting problem - a pretty woman to play Velma?

Velma hotter than Daphne, because the Daphne cast sucks so bad. Original Daphne was elegant, has curvy slim body, and has blowy red hair. A girly career woman. Not straighten red hair and skinny as a skeleton drug-addict-looking airhead. Guess the producers were in a hurry and they pick her just because her image as Buffy, who deals with paranormal beings. They forgot they had Isla Fisher in the lineup. Bunch of stoners.

I think they did it for the lesbian angle they were originally gonna go for.

Re: Hollywood Casting problem - a pretty woman to play Velma?

Velma seemed to look like the classic just-needs-a-makeover type, which was almost a cliche way back when. These were usually librarians or school teachers, but then blossom into romantc interests after a makeover.

Re: Hollywood Casting problem - a pretty woman to play Velma?

I concur with the poster who said that if Daphne had actually been prettier, Cardellini wouldn´t have come across as hot as much as she did compared to SMG, (not that I find SMG ugly, but she just wasnt a Daphne at all).

Other options for the role of Velma were Christina Ricci, and even rumored Alyssa Milano and Carla Gugino. So.... anyways it was going to be a cute Velma.

I honestly think that her casting was the only good thing in this movie. She was cast out of performance not looks. Yes, she´s cute but apparently she was the only one who auditioned dressed up as Velma which embarrassed her a lot when she noticed she was the only one who did that so I highly doubt she was aiming to appear attractive all along- but judging by the other options the studio didn´t want a plain Jane or didn´t find one- and she even cut her hair down instead of using a wig and she really fought to keep Velma under a sweater since they wanted Velma to dress more modern. I don´t think cartoon adaptation have to be a carbon copy as long as they keep the essence of the character which in this case was a brainy nerd and Linda got it right.

It wasn't that Daphnee/SMG isn't attractive. It's that awful wig.
