One Hour Photo : The Husband Should Have Been Arrested, not Sy the Photo Guy!

The Husband Should Have Been Arrested, not Sy the Photo Guy!

Watched this with my friend Helen so it's a dual review.

Williams is Sye the Photo Guy, who works in a Walmart-type department store for a very mean boss. He takes liking to a family that comes in from time to time- a housewife and her young son. Sy does their photos, and gives them freebies like larger prints and complimentary cameras. He especially likes the boy Jake, and Helen said this was because Jake reminded him of his youth.

Bad news though. The wife is married to a handsome but conniving little weasel, who is cheating on her with a fellow friend. Sy catches them in the act when he develops the photos of the mistress. To try to save the marriage, he places the pictures into the wife's envelope. She seems angry, but when Sy spies on her at dinner with the husband- she doesn't yell at him. Sy then uttered the same words Helen and me said: "What the hell is wrong with these people?"

The mean boss fires Sy for some nonsense neither Helen and me could understand (this could also be because at this point of the movie, we had reached for our knitting and were making coffee). But Sy always is at his best with the customers and with employees- he helped that Asian kid out with his bad math.

Sy attempts to frame the husband by going to his hotel and catching him in the act with the mistress. But for SOME reason, the feds decide to arrest Sy and NOT the cheating husband.

Helen and me grew up in a time when being unfaithful to your spouse was against the law, and frowned upon. We assume it is still not legal, and so why didn't the husband go to jail? He took vows, signed a contract and then was unfaithful! And for no reason either- he snaps at his wife earlier for excessive spending, but they were well off enough to afford new drapes. My God.

Over all we enjoyed the picture, and Robin Williams was so good as the sad, lonely man who now has to go to jail for trying to save the family he has grown to love. It was a tragedy in every regard.

FINAL GRADE: B

If you're going to write a review though, you really ought to watch the film properly.

Why do you think the boss was mean? The reason Sy was fired was because he was stealing from the store, arguing with people in front of customers and taking extended lunch breaks. The store manager was a reasonable person.

You're an idiot if you refuse to read people's reviews based on their age. Get a disease fast and die please. Loser.
This reply right here shows what kind of person you really are. And you say things like this one to complete strangers online because you know there can be no consequences. Sad and pathetic.

Re: The Husband Should Have Been Arrested, not Sy the Photo Guy!

Sy really had some mental problems and communication problems.

But yes, he was a nice guy.

Unfortunately, whilst Sy was giving away free merchandise and discounts he never paid for it. It came out of the store's money and therefore that's the same as stealing.

Like I said, if Sy wanted to do that he should have paid his own end to make up for the cash register transactions.

I always wonder how Sy got away with taking the extra set of prints for 11 years. Surely bill must have been a new manager. Most managers are super busy and rarely come back in the photo, pharmacy, and freezer departments but bill didn't seem that lax.

It's possible that Yoshi could have said something to bill about him being spaced out and odd on the job. He reacts a bit guilty but also shocked when Sy tells him he got fired. Shocked because he thought Sy might only get suspended or be forced to pay for the merchandise. Someone claimed he had taken about 700 photos and then there was a free camera plus roll of film. Doing the math this comes to about $300. Kind of steep but over 11 years. Surely they would have just taken it out of his paycheck.

One other theory is that bill is just a plain jerk. Sy went a little overboard with the AGFA guy but he was rude and in this case Sy was a customer. Bill was keeping 100% sanity and as soon as he saw a slip up he decided to go crazy digging dirt up on Sy. Although he does mention in the break room like they've had this conversation before. But then bill asks Sy about his vacation time and cordially tells him to use it. I assume Sy takes a vacation day on Tuesday and with him gone Bill is able to dig up as much dirt as he can. Spacing out, slicing an exposure, 90 minute lunch breaks, giving away free merchandise hiding a photo that wasn't his = let's check the counter and WHOA!

Wednesday comes and you can see Bill looking down on Sy as he does the liquid stuff in the units. Ok let's fire him now! Bill seems to know that Sy has been printing off extra sets that are not being paid for. He doesn't tell him that because it might get uglier and probably later they'll investigate Sy's place (even if he hadn't made himself a target). The 90 minute lunch breaks, blowing up at the Agfa guy and free merchandise and spacing out on the job is just the icing on the cake. But of course a good cake sells with frosting and just simply a plain cake might not sell so quickly.

As for will being arrested I think is harsh. He didn't break the law although he did sin greatly. I think Sy's punishment was enough and you can tell he feels pretty guilty when he comes home and hugs his son. It's almost like just now he's realizing how lucky he is. I just found it odd that he complained he had to work for the family's spending. Seems like he's working 40 hours and then having to do overtime when really he wants to skate by working 32 hours and banging Mia Burson the other 8 hours on fancy beaches and exquisite fancy hotel rooms. Yeah now I understand why he's a little strapped for cash.

But anyway decent post. This was a pretty decent film. I give it a B+. Only thing is that they seem to leave a lot out and it even goes on longer than......
"Robin Williams finest hour"
"Your legal attorney should be here in about 20-30 minutes...." And then Sy's story is like well over 60 minutes.

Usually time is a lot shorter in movies.

Re: The Husband Should Have Been Arrested, not Sy the Photo Guy!

Adultery has never been grounds for arrest. At least not in the history of the United States.

More generally, violating a contract isn't a criminal act.

Can't tell if the OP is trolling everybody.

The OP is either a troll or an idiot, maybe both.
