Jaws : Just watching it now.

Just watching it now.

The part where Mrs Kintner slaps Brody always gets me. She hits him because she thinks he allowed the people to swim knowing full well that Chrissie Watkins got munched. Yet nobody ever informs Mrs Kintner that it was Mayor Vaughn who allowed the beaches to be open. I would have told her right there and then. Brody didn't deserve that slap.

Re: Just watching it now.

The mayor just stood silently and watched

Re: Just watching it now.

Exactly. I know the lady had lost her son but someone should have told her who actually allowed the beaches to be open.

Re: Just watching it now.

I'm with Corky I'm afraid. Lest we forget, the Mayor hoodwinked the mortician and probably put him under duress to change "Shark Attack" to "Boating Accident" BUT Brody should have closed the beaches until there was evidence to the contrary.

He clearly went with the first theory - whch is precisely why he was so tense on the beach. When that woman screamed when frolicking around with her lover in the sea he was a bag of nerves. Also when he saw "Bad Hat Harry" with his swimming cap resembling a shark's muzzle he sat right forward as I recall.

Alex Kintner did not deserve to die. But as Corky explained, he (Brody), was the new kid in town and was indeed unsure. But ultimately he had the final say and should have stood his ground. Hell, even BRODY admitted he EARNED that slap. The Mayor said otherwise because he knew damn straight that he was actually the one in the wrong and the catalyst that led to Kintner's demise.

Re: Just watching it now.

He actually did deserve it. Yes, I felt bad for Martin also because it was his first summer and he was afraid and unsure what to do but ultimately it was his job to put his foot down and close the beaches. And that's that

Re: Just watching it now.

Right Yeah.put his foot down and get fired, like he did in the second movie. He tried to close the beach and was told not to. If you remember when the gentleman said he wanted it changed to a boating accident. Brody said "and you'll stand by that". So in my opinion it was the mayor who deserved the slap, not Brody.

Re: Just watching it now.

Well, that's your opinion and you're wrong. Brody had the right to close the beaches, it was his responsibility even if he got fired. And anyway if he closed the beaches he'd be hailed as a hero after what went down after

Re: Just watching it now.

I think it's bigger than that, now that I think about it. The 'gentleman' Scar refers to is the Doctor, as you know. He just said he was willing to stand by the falsification of an official document, and a death cert at that- one of the documents that comes with a big 'do not falsify- federal offence' warning on it.

He'd be pitting his elected ass against the town, and accusing a GP of said criminal act.

We give Vaughn a hard time, but he didn't give in to pressure to falsify the corner's report. If he had of stood his ground yada yada.

Re: Just watching it now.

Not "falsify" amend

Just a slight difference in semantics, as Hooper would say

Re: Just watching it now.

Oh, like an irregular verb- I amend, he falsified, we face criminal charges. Got it.

Shut it, Phy or face the end of my end of sentence

Re: Just watching it now.

No Corky, you are wrong my friend.

Re: Just watching it now.

OK I will elaborate here. There were three men in the wrong I suppose.

I've slept on it and concluded that Brody was stupid for the reasons already discussed but Vaughn and the mortician were FAR more to blame in a MORAL way.

The Mayor was an ass-licker not unlike most men in power. His popularity took precedence - so much so that he was willing to put his own kids in danger. Martin was NEGLIGENT. The mortician was a sad sack who was UNPROFESSIONAL. That, my friend is my final answer

"These days you have to boil someone before you can sleep with them"

Re: Just watching it now.

That wasn't merely a mortician- he was the accredited coroner and local GP. He risked jail time and being struck off the register. Brody would have had to rat him out to close the beaches, knowing what it would likely cost the Doc.
