Last Man Standing : IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
Re: IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
Had they actually banned the trolls/spammers in a timely manner and kept them from being here in the first place, it would have helped.
Personally, I hope it hurts them with regards to $.

Re: IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
I understand that with so many different boards it's difficult to keep the trolls at bay completely, but yeah, they could've done a bit more. Having said that, I'd rather still have these boards and deal with trolls than not have them. I know how to not be bothered by trolls or, if worse comes to worse, put them on my ignore list.
I can't imagine this being a cost issue. Does it really cost that much to run these boards? I can't see it costing more than it's worth.

Re: IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
No, it can't cost much plus they use the clicks as a way to set the prices for advertising on here. Which, of course, is why they allowed so many trolls.
I've been on boards before where you couldn't post anything for 48 hours after joining or you couldn't start a topic until you had 100 posts.
I hope this costs them lots of money. I know the local newspaper disabled commenting and the clicks on their site plummeted and it cost them money.

Me too! I can't figure out how in the heck they think getting rid of the message boards will benefit their site! I just looked at every site they listed as alternate places to go to. I don't see how any of them are in any way comparable to the system here.
I was on Facebook recently for Hell's Kitchen, and that site is gosh-awful and terrible to try and navigate within. Any other show's FB site would be the same.
I guess I'll just leave IMDb behind and try working with TV Guide & EW, and try and see what else I can find. I can see that previously.tv, which another poster suggested could at least be a viable option. I hope so.
On the plus side, I'll save a ton of time staying away from here! I certainly won't come here nearly as much. In fact, I will do my darnedest to stay away in protest.
Also, over on the NCIS IMDb board, a couple of people have posted links to petitions to sign to try to get them to keep the boards.
Re: IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
I am very sad to learn this. Our local newspaper group used to have all sorts of boards for various topics but they dropped them some months ago.
In contrast with those attached to the newspaper, I was very happy that most "conversations" on IMDB were positive. Many times I had people writing inI have posted comments on a few dozen different showsto disagree with me and in virtually all cases they were polite and respectful. I always have tried to do the same when responding to others on here. It's been a fun decade or so of commenting on some of my favorite showsnew and oldas well as seeing what others have to say about shows I dislike.
What I like about these forums contrasted with twitter is that you can write a complete thought or two, give an example of what you are talking about, and make a nice list that is much longer than what twitter allows.
So I ask, of the other places IMDB listedwhat would you recommend I start using if I wish to discuss TV series or movies without being limited to brief messages?
Why don't we just shoot 'em down and be through with it?

Re: IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
I would recommend Previously.TV.
Very organized boards, troll monitoring, and a lot of good people hooked on discussing their shows!

As much as I love visiting IMDB, I'm glad that they're not the only game in town.
You got that, IMDB administrators? IMDB isn't the only game in town!!!

Re: IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
Nothing to do with trolls or spammers. They are simply trying to move people to other platforms where they can more effectively mine posts for personal data to use in marketing. I have a comp sci college prof buddy who had one of the google boys as a student and he has been keeping me up to speed as to just how nefarious they are when it comes to attaching everything to everything. Does anyone think it is just coincidence that an item you mentioned to a friend on facebook yesterday suddenly shows up as a firefox or msnbc "item of interest" on your homepage? If you are running a script blocker you will know that pretty much every click to a web page also goes to about 30 other datamining sites. And this is just with winders based stuff. Chrome is twice as bad since is is directly run by the source of all evil.

Re: IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
I have an Android phone, and it's a daily battle trying to keep google out of my pants. Interest-based ads are only one part of the problem (which can *supposedly* be turned off.) Websites want my phone number (I get enough spam calls and texts already, thanks!), but google also wants my address, passwords, credit cards next it will be copies of my house keys. They "connect" my identity from one site to the next. Gotta log into google to use youtube since they bought it. I've gone so far as to manually delete accounts on my phone's "helpful" tracker. They sync your contacts to a server before they let you "turn off" sync, so they get to keep those. I can't even remember where to go to delete that, now that they have gone to "user-friendly" help pages.
I don't use facebook because I don't want MY feed repeated on my family's feeds, so that THEIR friends and strangers can see it. Gah. I can't wrap my mind around twitter replies. Even Imgur has a 140 character limit and I am not that terse, lol.
I don't want anonymity so that I can behave like a savage. I want it so I can't be stalked by anyone, whether an individual or group. :-(

Re: IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
Goodbye, IMDB.

My thoughts can be summed up in one emoticon.
"Never mind walking a mile in my shoes. Try thinking a day in my head."
Re: IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
I stopped coming to IMDb frequently around 2010 when they updated the site for the millionth time and they made it so we had to click several times to get to our own profiles.
It's sad that it has come to this because I like the messageboards and like reading people's views and topics on TV shows and movies, but IMDb killed IMDb.

Re: IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
That sucks. The boards are why I come here.
Re: IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
When I want to know about a movie, actor or charactor I go directly to the message boards,THEN the reviews. This board usually has lots more intetesting information offered than the main site. I see me spending alot less time on imdb in the future. I'll miss this place.
Re: IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
Someone said the Hells Kitchen site is bad. Try the Walking Dead site. Worst bunch of vulgar immature idiots ever.
Re: IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
Thoughts??
America is in an awful place culturally. We have two very polarized populations that can't get along with each other. The loudest subgroups on both sides are the least honest, the most hypocritical, and the most venomous. The internet has given every liberal troll, and every conservative troll in the country a loud voice, and IMDB is a place they've chosen to use that voice.
My advice to IMDB, is to do what youtube does, and disable the comment boards on IMDB pages that lend themselves to the constant flame wars that these dregs engage in (by the by, for those that may know me, I'm not denying that I'm among those dregs). Shut down the 'Politics' board, which was clearly created to try to isolate that nonsense in a page that nobody but those dregs cares about. Block commentary on the Michael Moore, George W. Bush, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Bill Maher, Donald Trump, etc. boards. Post clear and fully enforced content and conduct rules, and aggressively block accounts that abuse the commentary feature.
Let people who honestly want to discuss movies and TV shows do so. This can be done. I tend to believe that disabling the commentary feature across the board is not because of the vitriol, it's to save money because too many people refuse to follow the rules, and it costs them a fortune in moderation.
So. Thanks trolls. You ruined IMDB.
Re: IMDb disabling message boards in 2 weeks..
I've been on boards where you can type whatever you want, and they've got a filter so if you type "sh!t" instead of the actual word, it will still *bleep* you.
As I said previously, other boards won't let you post for 48 hours after you join or start a thread until you've made 100 posts. That would have been good to help keep out spam-bots.
But, let's be honest here. It isn't simply America. It is the anonymity which comes from the internet. Would you really be willing to say some of the things you said if your identity was known? Ive seen people make comments on the local paper using FB and the post wasnt anything controversial at all and they still get attacked.
Do you really want the public to know you support some controversial person?
Ive called out Roman Polanski supporters for this. They are so happy to support him, but if he were simply some guy who lived in their neighborhood who was accused of what Polanski did, there is no way they would stand there and say, Well, she didnt look like she was 13 when he took nude photos of her and had sex with her. At best, no one would ever talk to them again.
And, again, it doesnt even have to be anything controversial. How many times have we seen people come to this board and have a melt-down over Mike Baxter? We had one woman from some 3rd world country where women werent allowed to live on their own until they were 25 or so going off on Mikes oppressive way of thinking.
In the end it is stupid. If they really are losing money then fine, I get it. But the problems which evolve are almost always a result of it being run poorly. No way should there be spam-bots. They should not have so many report options. They should have automatically filtered out certain words and should not have had a politics board.
Im not advocating that everyone has to be out and exposed on the internet, but as long as there is anonymity people are going to say and do things which they wouldnt if their identity was known to the general public.
