The Dreamers : Anyone else feel…

Anyone else feel…

Does anyone else feel dirty after watching this movie? It just had such a perverted, bizarre storyline. Needless to say, it made me uncomfortable. I like the look of the film, the cinematography was good, the setting is great. I love Paris. Honestly if it was just a love story between Isabelle and Matthew, I would have really loved it. But it wasn't. The incest was gross, the homo-erotic tension was weird. Honestly it I was cringing half the time. The characters seemed so flat and childish, I was practically yelling "GROW UP!" at the screen. Oddly enough, the look of the film is what draws me back to watching it. It's not a feel-good movie to me all. I feel like a pervert after watching it. Anyone else feel the same?

Re: Anyone else feel…

Why was it perverted? Was anyone being exploited or abused? Was there any violence or depiction of grisly mutilation? Was there an imbalance of power?

The answer to these questions is no. The Dreamers is an art film. As such, it extends the boundaries of ordinary expectations of a romantic film. If you find depictions of homosexuality or consensual incest between adults to be repugnant, that is your right. You are entitled to avoid watching them if you wish. But those depictions in themselves are not obscene.

Re: Anyone else feel…

I guess I'm just not used to incest, I guess.

Re: Anyone else feel…

Don't guess! Make a decision.

Re: Anyone else feel…

I didn't even realize I typed that twice! LOL

Re: Anyone else feel…

actually there is no incest in the movie.Theo and Isabelle were together even before they were born, they purely love each other and don't want to be separeted that's all

Re: Anyone else feel…

I guess you never read "Les enfants terribles" by Jean Cocteau (first published in 1929) or "The Cement Garden" by Ian McEwan. I haven't read the latter myself yet, but I can tell you that the novel "The Holy Innocents" as well as the screenplay of "The Dreamers" drew heavily on Cocteau's novel, the way the relationship between Theo and Isabelle is portrayed. Of course their relationship is emotionally unhealthy - it is meant to be.

Re: Anyone else feel…

No we didn't. There is nothing obscene in the movie.
