The Dreamers : Did anyone want Mathew to…

Did anyone want Mathew to…

leave? Or leave on his own? I'm sorry, I just found Isabelle and Theo SO annoying and SO dysfunctional, and their "games" were not entertaining or fun (for Mathew, or for the audience for that matter.) I guess, I needed to see a stronger motivation for Mathew to stay w/ those two ASIDE from having the hots for Isabelle. I know he was naive, but that doesn't seem to be a strong enough motivation to move in w/ them.

So, I guess I'm not buying that the Mathew character, being seemingly "normal" would want to stay w/ them for more than a day.

Any thoughts?

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

Eva Green. Have you seen what she looks like?

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

Te he. I'm a female, but yes, I get the attraction. She's hot. But, that's what I meant in my question, that aside from wanting to get in her pants, why would he stay w/ those 2 who are missing some marbles.

He went along w/ all their dumb games and weirdness because he had the hots for Eva? I don't think that was the intent of the movie, that is why I have a problem w/ it.

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

The only reason was the sex. In general I cannot see the point of the film. I didn't like it. Meaningless. May be I am not cultivated enough to understand such … gems.

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

That's like cops and courts assuming all motivation is about money and/or sex. Lack of cultivation...? How about a lack of intelligence and curiosity...? How about an over-developed "moral high ground" where you think you know what the answer is...always. Some people question their upbringing...and teachings. Who are you to judge that...? Unless you consider yourself to be God...

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

Denial is a powerful thing...

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

I agree. After that first night, and in the morning when they were all awkward in the bathroom and he clearly felt uncomfortable...that's when I would have left and it seemed like he wanted to, too. Not sure why he stayed unless he just had absolutely no other acquaintances and wanted to immerse himself and feel a part of the city by being with two locals even if they were creeptastic? I don't know.

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

I don't think anyone who uses the word creeptastic should be watching the film anyway.

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

Oh, it's a sense of humor. It's much better than my dark depressive side! So quick to judge my entire personality from one word, 'tis a pity.

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

Reading some of the comments/retorts are almost as entertaining as the films themselves, very entertaining... Oh, Touche! for your reply in regards to creeptastic debate, made me smile...

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

He stayed because he had nowhere else to go. He couldn't go back to the US or he'd be sent to Vietnam. He couldn't go back to the hotel because he was broke. He couldn't even go back to the cinema where he felt most at home.
Theo and Isabelle accepted him and they loved him. And Matthew loved them. It wasn't just about sex. He was incredibly alienated by their sexuality at first, but then he became like them. The third part of one person.

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

Bingo.

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

No. I actually wanted him to stay and have a physical relationship with Theo as well.

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

He was invited to stay with them for a month while the parents were away. It's 1968; the twins were quirky, beautiful and fun (although a bit odd at times). They all had the cinema in common, which initially brought them together. Add sex into the mix and what 20 year old guy wouldn't stay for the experience?
Also, Matthew said he loved them.

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

Did you get a good look at Eva Green's hooters? They're amazing. What 20 year old in his right mind wouldn't stay, regardless of how weird Isabelle and Theo seemed? There is no ASIDE that matters.

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

What your comment lacks in eloquence, it more than makes up for in truth. This thread was started by a female who has absolutely no way of understanding how the typical young adult male brain works. I would have done just about anything to be with Eva Green in this film. She could have had sex with her brother right in front of me and then let him urinate in her mouth, and I would just be asking myself "When is my turn?!"

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

It was a combination of factors. Matthew was alone and lonely in a foreign country, and desperate to find friends. He couldn't return to the US or he would have faced being sent to Vietnam. The twins offered him acceptance into their culture, as well as their own exotic private world. Additionally, there was the lure of the fabulous huge apartment, free food and wine, a way of filling his days, plus of course a sexual r'ship with Isabelle the goddess.

I imagine he would have stayed until they got bored with him and kicked him out. (Despite the ending, I am pretty sure he would have gone back.)

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

I think he stayed primarily because he was consumed by Isabelle's beauty and innocence, but he also felt kinship to both of them in a foreign, changing world. After he realized the extent of Isabelle's dependence,he made a choice to "become" one of them, but Theo made it clear that he would never be as close as they were, and that he was just a temporary "fix" for Isabelle. I think the mother knew about their relationship(but not the father)and hoped the Mathew dynamic would help change it. Mathew knew it was over when she chose to follow Theo toward the riot police, and prove(to himself)that his convictions were real.

Re: Did anyone want Mathew to…

I could have wished for a different ending - Matthew and the twins become ever more deeply involved in their own blissful private world. But August ends, and of course their parents return. Matthew is alone once more, because of course, he cannot go on living with the twins. What happens to him then?
