Re: My Picks

I know a lot of ppl dislike 'Mars Attacks', but I liked since I first saw it 20 years ago, and re-watched several times. And kudos to Burton for bringing Sylvia Sidney to big screen twice. Too bad he hasn't done it with any other older primadonna, unless you count Joan Crawford's portrait in 'Big Eyes' and Michelle Pheifer.

I think Big Eyes is his best film in years, and he should do non-fantasy/horror films once in a blue moon. I never heard about that artist before, and it was pretty interesting. I was watching Whatever Happened to Baby Jane for the first time in 20 years after that with wife, and she noticed 'big eyes' painting in the Hudson's house.

Ed Wood is fascinating, understandably it was a flop, not exactly a subject interesting to most ppl, and it aimed for bigger audience that that film about Whales. (I remember it was heavily advertised, esp scene of SJP handing Depp her blouse scene).

Sleepy Hollow captures the mood of gothic Americana circa 1800 very well, hopefully he'll look into Poe and Lovecraft eventually.

Re: Tim Burton - favorites, least favorites

Really liked .. in no order

Big Fish .... very re-watchable

Ed Woods .... fun background on true film classics

Beetlejuice ... lots of funny moments and quotables. Weird but good weird.

The Corpse Bride ... watching the "making-of" and the "film with commentary" for once added to the experience. I usually avoid the commentary tracks.

Mars Attacks ... also weird but I liked it.
