The Watercooler : Founding Members Check In Here…

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

10 years ago, blah, haha. That's cool though, what did you go to school for? Who are the composers? Did you branch out to other types of music or still just classical?

Not too much these days. Still just lonely and pathetic I started getting more in touch with music too, like I put out people's music and stuff. Or at least I pretend too, no one cares and no one buys any records off me haha.

I read about the forums closing and got all sad and nostalgic about them, and then I got an e-mail saying KB PMed me. So I figured I'd spend a little time here before they're gone.

Not as much as I used to spend on here though haha.

I can't remember the last time I actually was on here. A lot of great memories though. This was the only internet community I liked or felt a part of.

I tried to find your profile, I'm glad to see you again!

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

I don't want to hijack the thread, especially since other former Sandboxers haven't stopped by yet. I'll send you a PM answering all your questions in a minute.

I'm editing this to say that yes, I realized I ended doing what I tried not to do and took up a whole page of replying to people. I'm sorry!

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

I was really hoping to get to say Hi and I guess bye to you again. I know you are probably doing wonderful things with your life now and I am glad you stopped by.

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

Oh hey! I wanted to send you a PM if that's okay with you? I just wasn't sure, earlier, that you'd read it.

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

I'd love it!

*** SIGN THE 13TH ANNIVERSARY GUESTBOOK***

On Friday, May 7th 1999, the IMDb admin, in their wisdom, added a handful of message boards to their Movie Database.
Initially, there were less than a couple of hundred members, and we enjoyed a hectic weekend bumping into, and getting to know each-other.
Over the years, the admin added new features and more message boards, expanding the website to its current size.
It's been thirteen years of, amongst other things,
People living at the bottom of the sea in an Ocean Liner,
A killer who blends in with the wallpaper,
Scientists experimenting with monkeys in an Arctic laboratory,
Vikings searching for a giant golden bell.
A man who loses his super powers when he sees red,
An Astronaut who lands on mirror image duplicate of Earth,
A lake monster that turns out to be old steam shovel,
And, some movie about a WWII bomber that crashed in the desert.
To signify that you were here on the 13th anniversary, please sign this guest book.
Thanks in advance, and all the best,

Dave's Place!!

First time I ever put a photo of myself 'out there' on the internet!! Crazy to think that we were all so anonymous back then!

People say that life is the thing; but I prefer reading.

Re: [ GlennME - SIGN THE 13TH ANNIVERSARY GUESTBOOK ]

Yes, me too and I have no idea how to do it, so I sent my pic snail mail to Gig who put it up there and eventually sent my pic back. It was the one with the harp. Sadly I don't remember yours.

A post without an OMG is a post incomplete.

Re: [ GlennME - SIGN THE 13TH ANNIVERSARY GUESTBOOK ]

Gig's a friend on facebook, so I still 'see' him around!

It's crazy how much the internet's changed and cameras/picture taking!

I remember the photos I put up (a passport pic, and one from my wedding reception!), and I recall having a scanner back then, so I guess I must've figured it out for myself. How funny that you posted yours to Gig.

People say that life is the thing; but I prefer reading.

Re: [ GlennME - SIGN THE 13TH ANNIVERSARY GUESTBOOK ]

Please send him a hi from me on his Facebook?

We had so much silly fun back then!

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

Dear KB,

What is this nonsense? I come to work, log in just to kill some time while reports are running and I'm confronted with this? I have never been so offended in all of my life. You are the worst person, and I hate you. In closing, *beep* off.

Sincerely,

P.S. Issa and I were just talking about you the other day for some reason I cannot recall because I'm super old now.

You are all part of a predictive simulation.

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

I somehow missed your reply. Don't hate me even more than you already do, sir Pugnacious Malionich.

To be honest I feel like this Trump presidency has already aged me 10 years and he's only been in office for 3 weeks. *grabs the vodka*

At least you and Issa are doing well, which makes me immensely happy. *starts getting teary-eyed*

Hello chiiiiiiiildren. It's so good to see so many wonderful users that haven't been here in a long time. I am saddened to read that the boards will be closed forever so I wanted to take this opportunity to express to all of you my fondness, caring, and love I have for each and every one of you. I have made some wonderful friends on this board whom I care for very much and will live in my heart forever. Those of you that don't know me as well, know that I care for you as well because there were many times you posted something that made me laugh, smile or even got under my skin a bit. That's what makes this place so special. I look forward to keeping in touch with many of you here be it through email, Twitter or any other social media. I will make certain to list ways that I can be contacted and I hope to hear from you soon.

Love Always,

Why am I gonna miss this place again?

Nostalgia has silver lining vision.

It ain't easy being green, or anything else, other than to be me

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

Like a horrible ex-boyfriend you catch yourself pining over

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

I actually have an ex-girlfriend trying to get back into my life and I'm talking ancient history as in high school years. We're just too far apart as in she's one of those Make America White Again (not an exaggeration, says the country was founded by white European Christians) and I'm just bewildered by the actual lack of supposed Christian values coming from a first-generation American.

It ain't easy being green, or anything else, other than to be me

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

Not a "founding" member either, but I browsed a lot in 2004 and joined in 2005.
Been using these damn boards for a dozen years now!

AKA: theguy938, Apathy-Ren, RendrogyNos-feratu, CommuNist-feratu, David_Hess, Apple-Juice, HandleBarbarian, Dirty_Sperm_Rag (I-IV), Lord_Lawnmower, Box-a-Hair, and probably others.

The Sandbox was the coolest back in the day. I remember IDOJ, Movie-Man-Bob, Elvie, God_Love_Robert, Meade_Skeleton, atheistgirl, and Allerdyce.

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

I remember your theguy938 name the most.

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

I was first here in June 1999, lost that account when I changed jobs as the account was tied in to my work email and I could not change my password as it required getting an emailed response.

So, clore-2 signed up in Oct 1999 and got to 9,996 posts before getting sacked. It was for cheating the profanity filters for an adult joke thread in the Sandbox. This was known as the St. Valentine's Day Massacre as about 40 of us were cut loose on Feb 14, 2003.

I signed up again the next day as clore_2 (underscore rather than hyphen).

It ain't easy being green, or anything else, other than to be me

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

Feb 99 here, so I am just about to hit registered 18 years. I think I might have the highest seniority of anyone in the thread so far. I really will miss this place. Any time I see a movie I like or hate the first place I head is to the boards here to see what other people think of it, and usually find some like minded comments, and sometimes some real gems of comments on the cast and crew.

I am astonished that they are closing this. Pointless slap in the face IMO. The announcement has spawned dozens of articles across the film circuit. I don't think that reporting would have happened if what they are doing was a non-event.

As far as I am concerned the people on these boards are IMdB not the pinheads who made this pointless and idiotic decision.

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

hi

suck it.

Re: Founding Members Check In Here…

here!

Found the Message Boards on the first day they opened…what a ride.

There were 11 boards on which to post originally. If memory serves, two of them were called "The Mens' Room" and "The Ladies' Room" or something off-putting as that. Of course both had co-ed posting and yes, it felt a little weird being a male posting in the "Ladies Room." Correct me if I'm wrong about this, but it's how I remember it.

My first name on the boards was Gryphon-7. Over time, due to silly fol-de-rol, I also went by the names Driftwood, _______ (people called me "Straight Line") and the one that stuck: The Gryphon. These were not sock-puppets, though my detractors will probably disagree. I originally joined in 1998. The IMDb, however, did some sort of realignment around 2000 and all that joined ahead of that time lost their original registration date.

I remember the first post "to get people started" was "Best Car Chase Scenes." I forgot which admin posted it, though. I feel amused at one of my earlier posts using the tune to "YMCA" for a funny post about "IMDb." At least I thought it was funny.

By the time I signed on that day there were about a dozen people already posting. One of them, called "Pippin-3," eventually captured my heart and I am pretty sure we were the first Board Couple to get married (April 14, 2001). A couple named Swede and Bio_Hazard were next.

I loved posting on the IMDb. It was the highlight of my day. I loved movies and discussing them endlessly was highly satisfying. I made so many friends on these boards and after all these years am still in contact with many of them and have developed deep friendships.

There was a terrible flame war in 1998, sad to say. There was a glitch in the IMDb programming that allowed anyone to read anyone's private messages simply by hitting the space bar before typing in their handle. Accusations were hurled from every corner of the Message Boards. Whoever found the original glitch used this method to post harmful and vile messages under whatever alias they chose. When the glitch was discovered it was patched right away. However, people took sides and the era of good feeling faded.

The Sandbox, originally a board for testing markup, became a gathering for anything not necessarily film related. It lasted for a while and some very clever people posted maniacle nonsense therebut often with cogent points.

So many memories. So many stories. Remember "Major Wizard of Oz Goofs?" It stayed on the Goofs board for a long time before it was taken down do to it being satire and not actual goofs. (e.g. "Toto was portrayed by a sheep in a couple of scenes.")

Goodbye Message Boards. Goodbye film lovers. We may not have tomorrow. But we had yesterday.

"Major Wizard of Oz Goofs" for those who have never read it, here it is one more time.

I'm amazed more people haven't spotted these film flubs:

* Part of the movie is in black and white, then inadvertently goes to color, and then back to black and white! An obvious continuity gaffe.

* Although the movie purports to be in Kansas, several scenes are obviously filmed on a Hollywood sound stage.

* The scene where the teacher rides past Dorothy's bedroom window in the midst of a tornado is physically impossible.

* When the characters sing you can hear music accompanying them but there are no radios or musicians in the area!

* For a land to exist "over the rainbow" it would have to be lighter than air, and as Dorothy was already shown to be composed of solid matter, how come she didn't
fall back down to earth?

* Some of the so-called "munchkins" are obviously children wearing fake facial hair and grown up clothes.

* The "yellow brick road" is not really yellow as much as it is golden. And there is some speculation that it isn't really made of brick either. (Thanks to the
International Brick Layers Union for providing that piece of information.)

* Scarecrows are inanimate objects moved solely by the wind. They can not move at will, much less dance.

* A "tin man" is a slang term for an aluminum siding salesman. The movie portrays the salesman as an actual tin man. And what's with the ax? Someone in the
research department should've gotten fired over this flub.

* Lions growl. They do not talk. There is no recorded evidence of one talking, ever. Perhaps the filmmaker's were thinking of the Biblical Balaam's ass, which is the
only recorded incident of an animal actually speaking coherent sentences.

* Lions are also quadrupeds, meaning they walk on all fours. The "lion" in the movie is obviously a man in a suit trying to pass himself off as the real thing.

* As for the ruby red slippers, well, despite the sure protestations from some of our lady-folk here, shoes do not have magical powers.

* The witch views the goings on through her crystal ball. A purely fictional device. Obviously special effects created the scenes she was supposed to be watching in the ball.
(Note: While there is a device on the market called "The Magic 8 Ball," which is a genuine fortune telling device, this is not the type of ball employed in the scene just
mentioned.)

* Monkeys do not have wings, and cannot fly.

* The witch flies on a broom and skywrites with it as well. Again, an invented fiction that would make Oliver Stone proud.

* Trees cannot talk, nor can they "throw" apples. Once an apple is ripe, however, it may fall onto the ground directly beneath it.

* Although there are many scenes with trees in them, not once does Toto mark his territory on them. This goes against common sense and ruins the believability of
the movie.

* For that matter no character in the entire movie goes to the bathroom. Although the "tin man" does leak at one point it's tears that overflow, not urine.

* Perhaps the biggest goof of all: Everything the characters went to the wizard to receive, THEY ALREADY HAD! The Scarecrow wanted a brain, YET HE DEVISED THE PLAN TO GET INTO THE CASTLE! The Tin Man wanted a heart YET HE CRIED TEARS OF SADNESS! The lion wanted courage, YET HE'S THE ONE WHO FOUGHT THE CROCODILES! (In an alternate, never-before-seen version currently in a locked vault in Ted Turner's Montana ranch.)

* Also, did anybody note that the same characters playing the tin man, scarecrow, lion, Mr. Oz, and the wicked witch, were also playing the farm hands, fortune
teller and teacher? Obviously a sign of a low budget, since the meager makeup on their alternate characters wasn't enough to make their faces look much different.

* Continuity flub: At one point Toto is played by a small sheep, but only for a few frames. I forget which scene this is in, but once seen it's obviously a sheep
stand-in.

A child of five could understand this. Fetch me a child of five.

Thanks, Caramel. I thought that was lost and gone forever.
