Man, that is wild. That is what is great about Metallica. Regardless of all things, everyone interprets them differently and has a preferred sound that they have produced. Metallica rules.

Hahaha, yea,I know what you mean. Everyone wants to hear Master Of Puppets owns all or they become rude and ignorant towards your opinions. I love debating Metallica; they're possibly the best band to do so with. I'll give those songs you named a listen and let you know what I think.

Re: Rank Metallica's albums-Best to Worst
Best: Kill 'Em All. Yeah, the quality of it kinda sucks but the songs on it kick ass especially, The Four Horsemen, Seek and Destroy and Metal Militia.
2nd: Black Album. Although I prefer the stuff they did before this, there are a lot of great songs on this album. It's also a good balance between heavy-ness of the playing and the producing/mixing which gives all the songs a pretty unique sound.
3rd: Master of Puppets. There's a few songs I haven't heard from this but the songs I have heard are ace. The title track is definately the stand out song on the album. It's got amazing riffs, it's fast, has great solos and a nice mellow part to it.
Worst: St. Anger. I don't mind the Title track and Frantic but the rest of the album sucks and the sound quality as well as their style on this album is pretty much unbearable.
Thos are the only one's I can really rate as with the other albums I've only heard a couple of songs from each one.
I like what I've heard of Load though and For Whom The Bell Tolls and One from Ride and Justice are 2 of my favourite Metallica songs.

3. Black - Solid all around album, tread and GTF are my two faves off this album
4. Lightning - Pretty danged solid
5. Kill - Great first outing
6. Load - Mixed, some great tunes, some not as good but overall not a bad album
7. Reload - Same as above
8. St Anger - only Met album I couldn't bring myself to buy, had a listen to it from beginning to end once and nothing jumped out and grabbed me and said this is Metallica.

Re: Rank Metallica's albums-Best to Worst
Puppets/Justice/Lightning - All damn near perfect
Black - Best production of all of them, if the tracks were as good it would be perfection
Kill - One of the best debut albums EVER
Just felt it necessary to distance the last three
Load - Good, but nowhere near the first 5
Reload - Very close second to Load
Anger - Still better than most of the crap people call music these days
Black - Best production of all of them, if the tracks were as good it would be perfection

Re: Rank Metallica's albums-Best to Worst
1. Ride the Lightning Their finest hour. If I were to make a song list, Creeping Death would be #1 followed closely by Ride the Lightning. No loser songs on this one.
2. Kill 'Em All Best debut album of all time. No loser songs. Only beaten by Lightning because no songs = Creeping Death.
3. Puppets In a close race for top 3, puppets falls short for two reasons. First, I don't like Orion at all. I get bored by it after the first minute or so. Second, to me the songs have been overplayed and overhyped compared to the other two CD's. Damage, Inc is the best song on the CD.
4. Justice To Live is to Die and the song And Justice for All bring this one down pretty far from the top 3 in my opinion. I don't mind long songs at all. In fact there are many long songs that are so good you don't realize how long they are. Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden is a perfect example. It's 13 minutes, but you don't realize it because it is so good. Dyer's Eve is a great song and Blackened is one of my faves as well.
5. Death Magnetic Pretty good return to their roots. Has the same sound as the older CD's, but falls short in the creativity department.
6. Black Album A CD that was obviously created to make money, lots of money. All songs are short so they can be made into singles / videos. Nothing Else Matters is a terrible song. The energy and power of the earlier albums is gone.
7. Load King Nothing is pretty good. Other songs are OK. Other songs are so bad I can't listen too them.
8. Re-Load Fuel is OK. Everything else is awful.
NA. St. Anger I haven't heard hardly any of St. Anger, so I can't really rank it. The song St. Anger is terrible though.

My wife and I were talking about this very subject today. As of this post, Death Magnetic is out but I won't include it as I couldn't possibly rank it with the rest so soon.
1. Ride the Lightning
2. Black
3. Master of Puppets
4. And Justice for All
(there's a pretty sizable gap here)
5. Load
6. St. Anger
7. Kill 'em All

Re: Rank Metallica's albums-Best to Worst
jaltenbu - my top five is almost identical to yours. The first Metallica track I ever heard was Fight Fire With Fire way back in '84 and it completely blew me away. Before that there had been only Black Sabbath, Saxon, Scorpions, Iron Maiden etc with 80's US metal being a bit of a joke then suddenly there was this band sounding heavier than anything I'd ever heard before. An incredible moment. I was lucky to be there when they played Donnington in August 85 with Cliff Burton and the ground literally shook with his playing, the bass was so damn loud!
It seems clear to me there are two disinct generations of Metallica fans; those who were there from the early days going up to around the 'Black' album and the 'second' generation post the Black album era. So my own top list is;
1) 'Ride the Lightning'; highlights are Fight Fire with Fire, RTL, Fade to Black and Creeping Death.
2) Kill 'Em, All; Whiplash (probably the greatest thrash song ever with Motorhead and Destruction both doing excellent cover versions), The Four Horsemen, Phantom Lord and No Remorse.
3) Master of Puppets; the album where - for me - early warning signs of later pretentiousness were starting to creep in. Highlights were Disposable Heroes, Damage Inc and Battery.
4) Garage Days '87 EP with Crash Course in Brain Surgery being the best for me.
5) Black album; Sad but True & Enter Sandman but not too much else on here for me
6) Justice this was the album that did for me with Metallica and the whole album nosedived after Blackened. Barring 'One', the rest were overlong, disjointed songs and I never saw them again after the 'Justice' tour
Haven't heard Load and Reload but have seen the various videos from this era, and they were shockingly bad although "I Disappear" was admittedly excellent.
St Anger; 'Frantic' was okay but the rest of the album a sad joke.
As for 'Death Magnetic', well, despite the awful distorted production (sounds like the old home made cassette tapes from years ago!), not too bad on early listens and heralds back to the old days between MOP and AJFA. The jury's still out on this one for me
"It's because of movies like this that illegal downloading exists and you can be bored for free"

For the record I wouldn't say there is a "bad" album and some of the rankings are very close. If St. Anger was re-recorded without that goddamn
annoying snare drum effect it would be much much better.

Re: Rank Metallica's albums - Best to Worst
1) Kill 'Em All
- This is thrash metal perfection, and I love every single track to death. I love the gritty production, Hit The Lights and Phantom Lord are awesome and some of their best songs ever, and let's not forget the gorgeous Anesthesia, which is easily the best instrumental they ever made.
2) Master of Puppets
- Is pretty neck and neck with Ride The Lightning, but I find myself listening to this one more often. The production is flawless, actually think the three albums they made produced by Flemming Rasmussen are their best ones, production-wise. That makes me kind of proud to be Danish :) The best tracks are Leper Messiah and Damage, Inc. (wonderful intro to Damage, Inc. by Cliff Burton!)
3) Ride The Lightning
- Has the possibly best Metallica track ever, For Whom The Bell Tolls. Amazing song, and it's inclusion alone warrants a top 3 spot for this album. Again, I love the sound of their first albums, before they got so I want to say "streamlined", in lack of a better word. Metal should be grainy and gritty. Other awesome songs are Ride The Lightning and Creeping Death.
4) Load
- Criminally underrated. I think people's main problem with it is the fact that it isn't metal, but I think that when you get over that and take it for what it is, then it's just a brilliant hard-rock album. The high quality of the songs would also show in S&M, where the versions of Load songs like Hero Of The Day and Outlaw Thorn would go from great to epic with the orchestra, whereas songs like The Thing That Should Not Be and One are great, and just remain great with the orchestra.
5) And Justice For All
- I LOVE the title track and Dyers Eve. The rest of this album tends to be kind of a hit-or-miss to me. To Live Is To Die should be mentioned as well, another very, very good (almost)-instrumental, which Cliff would have been proud of. The production is, again, great - I'm not too crazy about the missing bass in some places, but the overall the quality is brilliant.
6) St. Anger
- I put this one above the Black Album. So sue me! I'm not loving this, but I still think it has some solid tracks. The Unnamed Feeling is brilliant, and ranks up there with Master Of Puppets and The Four Horsemen in my book, that song is a stroke of genius. While the lyrics overall seemed to be well, not so good ("My World"? Really?), and the production was a bit, well, stupid (damn you, Bob Rock), it's still fairly solid. Granted, if it didn't have The Unnamed Feeling, then I'd probably rate it lower than Black Album, but I still don't find it half as bad as everybody make it out to be. Then I can overlook a few missteps like Frantic lame song.
7) Metallica
- On the other hand, then I don't get why everybody creams over this one. I do think that Sad But True and The God That Failed are very good, and obviously I like the riff to Enter Sandman as much as the next man, but seeing as this came out after having released 4 thrash metal masterpieces, it's just painful to listen to. The production bugs me, since it's supposed to be a metal album (isn't it?), Bob Rock is an awful, awful man, and approximately 3/4 of the songs on the album are just plain mistakes. But at least it has more than one highlight, unlike
8) ReLoad
- First things first: The Memory Remains is an excellent track. Very, very good. The rest of the album, however, is just an abomination. Considering how they were written at the same time as the songs for one of their best albums are written, kind of makes me wonder if Load was just a fluke, or if this was just a string of off-days out together. But, as I said before, I love The Memory Remains, and I don't exactly hate Unforgiven II, but overall this is pretty terrible.
I do own Death Magnetic, but I haven't listened to it enough, so it's hard for me to rank it with these albums. I do believe, though, that I'd put it in between Justice and St. Anger.

I appreciate them taking some risks with st.anger and load alot more than the creative husk that was reload.
And justice is probably the most technically impressive album, and I think it would be more peoples favourite if it had the production value of the black album
Garage Inc gets such a high rating for Whiskey in a Jar, Sabra Cadabra and especially Mercyful Fate
10. St.Anger
9. Death Magnetic
8. Kill em All
7. The Black Album

Wow, came into this late
1. Master Of Puppets
2. Ride The Lightning
3. And Justice For All
4. Kill Em All
5. The Black Album
I'm 37, I was a massive fan of theirs in the '80's and early '90's. I wasn't keen on their stuff from Load onwards.
My wife would reverse 1 and 2, and 4 and 5 I guess
